TALL TALES

A computer rolled into a bakery and went up to the counter.  There were doughnuts and muffins and pastries, but the computer pointed at a plate of cookies.  "Hello," it said in an electronic voice.

Astonished, the counter person replied, "Wow, we don't get too many computers in this store.  Do you want some of these cookies?"

"Well," said the computer, "I might.  Could you tell me how many bites are in each one?"

"I'm sorry," said the counter person.  "There aren't any bytes in these cookies, just chips."

Jimmy was explaining to his dad the kind of computer he wanted.  "First we'll discuss hardware, and then we'll talk about the software I need."

"Wait a minute," said Jimmy's dad.  "How is hardware different from software?"

Jimmy just shook his head and said, "Hardware is the part of a computer that you can kick."

DON'T KNOW MUCH ABOUT THE 50 STATES

Sita Raam Kids,

This topic is new.  Every month I will list one State, starting in ABC order, and give you as much information as possible so that you can have knowledge about the country you are proud to call HOME!!!!!!!

It will also help you in school as you learn about American History.

So let us begin......

INTRODUCTION

Look at the American Flag.  Some people call it OLD GLORY.  Others call it the STARS and STRIPES.  What do you see?

Fifty white stars.  That's easy: one for each state.  But there are only thirteen stripes.  Why?  Those red and white stripes stand for the thirteen states that made up the United States of America in 1776, the year that America was born.

Those stripes tell us that the United States of America was not always such a big place.  This country began more than two hundred years ago, when the thirteen places we now call states were still called colonies ruled by the King of England.

The thirteen separate states agreed to stand together as one nation to help one another.  That is how this great land got its name-----the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.  The U.S.A. has changed a great deal during the past two centuries.  Over the years more states were added.  That is called being "admitted to the Union." just like getting an admission ticket to the movies.  Only the states didn't have to buy a ticket.

The information you will receive on each state will not just have dates of admission and names of capitals but it will be loaded with questions and answers about unusual people and places that make learning about the states a lot of fun.

ALABAMA

NICKNAME:  The Yellowhammer State

STATEHOOD:  1819

CAPITAL:  Montgomery

STATE FLOWER:  Camellia

STATE BIRD:  Yellowhammer

What do Alabama's nickname and state bird have to do with the Civil War?

Alabama is called the Yellowhammer State because during the Civil War, many of the state's soldiers wore bright yellow uniforms. (Not very good camouflage, huh?)  The yellowhammer was choosen as the state bird because it is the same color as those uniforms.

Where should you go if you want to feel out of this world?

To Space Camp in Huntsville!  There you can learn about space missions and feel what it's like to tumble around weightless in space.  The space rocket that first sent people to the moon was invented at the Alabama Space and Rocket Center at Huntsville.

Where did Rosa Parks purposely park herself, in protest?

In 1955 Rosa Parks was arrested for sitting in an empty seat on a bus in Montgomery.  The seat was for Caucasian people only, and Parks is African American.  Her courage started a yearlong boycott during which African American people refused to ride buses.  Eventually they won the right to sit wherever they wanted.

Alabama gets its name from a Choctaw Indian word that means, "Vegetation Gatherers."
